Much weaker than expected. Some NYC payback, some due to job losses, and some due to trouble with the housing agencies that has subsequently been patched up. Note the recent spike in mtg apps post agency where it’s back to business as usual.

  • Starts fall 6.2% m/m; both single and multi-family starts drop, latter still correcting from NYC building code boost in June.
  • Y/Y starts down 33.1%.
  • Building permits, leading indicator of starts, down 8.9% m/m and -36.4% y/y; single family permits down 5.1% m/m after -5.2% m/m in July.
